LockBit ransomware blamed for Royal Mail attack
LockBit has emerged as the most prolific name in ransomware attacks and has now been blamed for an incident that has hit Royal Mail’s international operations. LockBit operators do not just encrypt the files but also commit “double extortion”, where they steal the data and threaten to release it online. The group responsible demanded over £65m to safely return the company\’s stolen data following the January cyber-attack.
The Royal Mail attack has caused significant disruption, preventing people from sending packages overseas, at least until this week when their full export service was restored to normality once more. The malware was able to print ransom demands on affected network printers too.
